First a little background on GSTR-9.
Introduction to GSTR-9
What is GSTR-9?
GSTR 9 is the annual return to be filed once a year by all taxpayers registered under GST. It consists of all details regarding the outward and inward supplies made/received during the relevant previous year under different tax heads i.e. CGST, SGST & IGST and HSN codes. GSTR-9 is a consolidation of all the monthly/quarterly returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-2A, GSTR-3B) filed in that particular year. This is the most complex among the various returns to be filed by those registered with GST. It includes an extensive reconciliation of data for 100% transparent disclosures.
GSTR-9 filing involves the following 4 return forms based on applicability:
GSTR-9: To be filed by regular taxpayers filing GSTR-1, GSTR-2 and GSTR-3
GSTR-9A: This is to be filed by those registered under the GST composition scheme.
GSTR-9B: E-commerce operators who have filed GSTR-8 during the financial year are supposed to file their GSTR-9B
GSTR-9C: All taxpayers having an annual turnover exceeding Rs. 2 crores during the financial year are supposed to file GSTR9-C. Such taxpayers are required to get their accounts audited and file a copy of audited annual accounts, reconciliation statement of tax already paid and details of tax payable as per audited accounts, along with this return.
For taxpayers with aggregate turnover of less than 2 Crores in FY 2017-18 and 2018-19, GSTR-9 filing has been made optional and late fee has been exempted.
